ISC is one of the partners working on the Refugee Crisis Intervention Service (RCIS) project being taken forward by RAISE. It has been formed to help refugees and asylum seekers experiencing acute mental ill health. A Crisis Intervention Worker provides free, confidential, practical and emotional support and short term counselling.
The project refers clients who need support to counselling services such as the Freedom from Torture. Many Somalis are in mental health institutions and suicide has become more common within the Somali refugee community.
Clients suffer from stress often triggered by exile and the loss of family members, friends, job as well as isolation, racism, culture shock and fear of being returned to Somalia. In many post traumatic distress order has been diagnosed.
ISC’s Women’s Group meets every Tuesday afternoon at our Centre at Finsbury Park Trust, 225-229 Seven Sisters Road, Finsbury Park. It is a space for women to come together to share experiences and talk about the things they care about.
